Gary E. Stevenson shares an incredibly important message of the dangers of comparison on social media through a personal example that will have you rolling. Make sure to watch the video at the end. It will be the best thing you see all day.

“As you scroll through your news feed online, you might feel somewhat discouraged at times when you see images that portray an idealized reality of those you follow on social media. This may lead to debilitating comparisons. During this past general conference in October, I discussed how we should avoid comparing ourselves to others on social media.

I used this video as part of my BYU Women’s Conference address to share one of our humorous family secrets, as it describes our family photo taken some years ago, before the advent of social media. If this photo would have been taken in 2017, it likely would have been posted on social media—presenting a family of four lovely, well-behaved boys, color coordinated, enjoying a harmonious family photo opportunity together. The real story is quite different.

As you can see, we need to be mindful of the hazards and risks of our online communications. The world usually is just not as bright or perfect as it appears on social media. I invite all of us to avoid comparing ourselves to others around us as we use these new communication platforms for good in the world.”
